About Don

Former St. Charles Mayor Don DeWitte, a 60-year resident of Kane County, has a proven record of getting things done. As an elected official during the Great Recession, Don worked tirelessly to protect his constituents from financial distress while remaining fiscally responsible. During the late 2000’s, Don’s administration was able to reduce the tax burden on St. Charles residents, reduce the city’s workforce without laying off any employees, and improve city services at the same time. His leadership brought new construction and businesses to Kane County, and his efforts to finalize development agreements and commence the First Street Redevelopment Project in St. Charles have revitalized the city’s downtown business district. Furthermore, under his leadership, St. Charles undertook the Red Gate Bridge project, a $26 million public works infrastructure project, the largest ever in the city’s history.

In addition, his involvement in the Kane County Council of Mayors and the MetroWest Council of Government, including serving as the MetroWest Council’s president in 2009 and 2010, has helped to promote local government efforts in the entire region. After serving eight years as mayor, Don also served for five years as a representative of Kane County on the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Board. In all, Don has a proven and established track record of working hard to get things accomplished across the 33rd Senate District.

Before he was elected mayor, Don was a St. Charles Alderman for 12 years. His father previously served as a St. Charles alderman for 26 years in the same seat Don would later hold. His mother worked as a reporter and editor of the local newspaper, helping to teach her son the importance of working for the public good.

Don attended Elgin Community College and the University of Illinois Springfield before beginning a four decades-long career in the building materials industry, serving in various positions with local and national manufacturers, primarily in kitchen design and sales.

Don is happily married to his wife Diane of 34 years, and together they have raised two children, Patrick of Chicago and Michael of Golden, Colorado. The DeWittes are life-long members of St. Patrick Church in St. Charles, and regularly support two local non-profits, Lazarus House in St. Charles and CASA Kane County.
